For Winterkaravaan 2017, Pauline van Leeuwen and I created this show about creating encounters in the old chocolate factory in Alkmaar. The audience was challenged to have an encounter with an unknown other from the audience. An auditory performance through head phones, with live music, that stimulated curiosity to the other and built up the desire to take off the headphones at the end of the show and burst out in conversation.
Theaterkrant wrote about Er was een begin: “Brecht Hermans and Pauline van Leeuwen found each other in their love for theatre as an encounter. In our headphones, the two of them talk to us in turns and give us assignments that – luckily not compulsory – stimulate contact. After a while everyone takes place next to an unknown person on a sheepskin to drink coffee or tea together. Cynics will be quick to put this away as cheesy and this theatre form is not very new anymore, but the sweet setup of Hermans and Van Leeuwen visibly has its effect.”
With many thanks to the complete team of Karavaan and to our coach Manon van Hoeckel.
